Advocate

Join SMAA in advocating for solutions to hunger, housing, social isolation, poverty, and racial injustice!

Together we can build strong, equitable communities.

Mainers are facing increasingly complex challenges, including a severe lack of affordable housing, rising food costs, and difficulty accessing support to keep them healthy and safe. For older adults, many of whom are on fixed incomes, these challenges have become especially dire, resulting in poor health outcomes. The negative effects of these issues on the mental and physical well-being of older Mainers are also being compounded by a rise in social isolation. Research clearly shows that chronic loneliness is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline.

SMAA and our partners are working to implement
solutions to these problems, and YOU can help!

Get out and vote!

Local, state, and federal politics all have a significant impact on the lives of older Mainers and Mainers with disabilities. The candidates who are elected will have the power to make decisions about affordable housing, Medicare, social safety net spending, mental healthcare availability, and other pertinent issues.

Information about Maine voting laws, registering to vote, polling locations, and what’s on this year’s ballot is available at Vote411 and in the Maine.gov Voter Guide.
