Nutrition Education: Stay Hydrated this Spring

In this month’s Nutrition Education article, SMAA Intern and UNE Dietetic Student, Kelly Chisholm, shares advice on how to stay hydrated this spring!

Stay Hydrated This Spring

As the seasons change and the days become warmer, it’s important to stay hydrated. Drinking enough water helps with energy levels, digestion, and keeping your body functioning at its best. Here are some tips and reminders to help you stay on top of your hydration this spring.

Make Water a Daily Habit

Drinking water regularly throughout the day is essential. The National Institute on Aging recommends that older adults drink plenty of fluids, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration can happen quickly and may lead to dizziness, confusion, or fatigue. Keep a water bottle nearby and sip throughout the day.

Boost Hydration with Flavorful Drinks and Foods

If plain water isn’t appealing, add a slice of lemon, cucumber, or berries for flavor. Herbal teas, low-sodium broths, and milk also help with hydration. Eating water-rich foods like strawberries, melons, cucumbers, and lettuce is an easy way to stay hydrated. Be mindful of beverages with added sugars, caffeine, or alcohol, as they may have a dehydrating effect.

Recognize the Signs of Dehydration

As we age, our sense of thirst may decrease, making it even more important to pay attention to our hydration levels. Common signs of dehydration include:

      ● Dry mouth or lips

      ● Dark-colored urine

      ● Feeling lightheaded or dizzy

      ● Fatigue or confusion

If you notice these symptoms, increase your fluid intake and reach out to a healthcare provider if needed.
