The Power of Tai Chi

Check out this inspiring story from Agewell client, Roann, on her experience with SMAA’s Tai Chi classes.

“In 2018, I suffered a head injury that resulted in cognitive issues, hindering my 40-year profession and my critical thinking during emergencies, leaving me overwhelmed. Since then, I’ve participated in the SMAA volunteer-led Tai Chi Program, which has helped reduce my chronic pain and falls. Despite challenges in maintaining a routine, I still aim to practice daily.

On February 5, before work, I completed a full Tai Chi warm-up and routine. While arriving at work, I noticed multiple police cars responding to an active shooter situation at the nearby Maine Mall. Our store went into lockdown, and most customers left, but I stayed calm, reassuring my colleagues and those customers who remained while we sheltered in place. The next day, I realized I had managed the crisis without panic for the first time since my injury. I credit my years of Tai Chi practice with SMAA and the skills I’ve learned for enabling me to stay calm so that I could help others.”

Thank you, Roann, for sharing your Tai Chi journey!
