5 Healthy Tips to Begin 2025

For many people, the new year is a time to set new goals and resolutions. Here are some tips and suggestions to keep in mind.

Give yourself time to rest. Rest is extremely important for your health. According to the National Institute of Health, adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Tips for better sleep include: creating a bedtime routine, avoiding bright lights before bed, not eating a big meal right before you go to sleep, getting movement in throughout the day, and staying away from caffeine and alcohol at night.

Be kind to your body. For you, this may mean eating more fruits and/or vegetables at mealtimes or choosing more nutrient-dense foods. Nutrient-dense foods include whole-grain bread, colorful veggies, and beans. Focus heavily on the foods you enjoy and make your meals around those. Incorporate your favorite flavors into new meals and ingredients you are trying out.

Incorporate movement into your daily routine. Movement looks different for all of us. For people recovering from an injury or who have a disability, it may be beneficial to set a goal of walking to the kitchen a few times a day or stretching. For others, a goal may be to work on resistance exercises or running. Remember, make sure the goal is relevant to you. Exercise is important to maintain our lean muscles and prevent falls.

Tend to your social health. As we enter the colder winter months it is harder to get out or see other people, but social connection benefits us physically, mentally, and emotionally. Make a goal of spending time with others. If this is difficult to do in person, call a friend or family member each day. Phone Pals may be a great way to stay connected with someone while at home. Tip for setting goals: make them SMART goals!

Specific: Is it clear to follow?
Measurable: How will you track your progress?
Achievable: Is it realistic and are you capable?
Relevant: Does it align with your objective and what you want?
Time-bound: Do you want a deadline?

Remember to be kind to yourself and have a Happy New Year!
