Here are some examples of ways you could volunteer with older people across Southern Maine:

  • Deliver meals across Cumberland and York counties with our Meals on Wheels program
  • Get moving by teaching a Tai Chi or A Matter of Balance class at one of our locations
  • Volunteer with Money Minders to help older Mainers process their bills, balance their checkbooks, and create budgets
  • Have a weekly phone call with an older Mainer through our Phone Pals program
  • Help Mainers navigate their Medicare coverage
  • Support our programs with data collection and administrative tasks

Whether you’re interested in volunteering every week or just a few hours a month, we’d love to have you and can find an opportunity that fits your hopes and skills!

“SMAA has given me a way to know Maine, my community, and a way to give back. I'm really happy to be involved!” - Bev, Phone Pals Volunteer

Volunteer Commitment

We ask our volunteers to commit at least six months of volunteering with our agency. Volunteers should have an interest in supporting diverse communities and an interest in getting involved and giving back. Time commitments vary from weekly engagements to more sporadic opportunities. If you're interested in getting involved, we can find a place for you!

The Southern Maine Agency on Aging's mission is to improve the quality of life for older adults, adults with disabilities, and the people who care for them. We aim to improve access to services and programs for underserved populations and their caregivers, such as older New Mainers, LGBTQIA+ older adults, older adults living in rural communities, older adults experiencing homelessness, and older adults with sensory impairments. We are looking for volunteers interested in working with individuals from these backgrounds to help us broaden our reach and deepen our impact.

Southern Maine Agency on Aging is home to the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Southern Maine, which is part of the network of AmeriCorps Seniors Programs. RSVP of Southern Maine pairs individuals age 55 and older with volunteer opportunities at local nonprofits throughout Cumberland and York counties.
